FOUNDATION OF SHAHJAHANPUR

Bahadur Khan and his brother Diler Khan had Qanauj and Kalpi as their jagirs. They were the sons of a Daudzai trader Dariya Khan who entered the service of Jahangir and Shahjahan. In 1647 AD, Bahadur Khan sent treasures from Delhi to Qanauj via Kant-Gola which was plundered by Bachhil and Gaur rajputs. Most of the men of Bahadur khan were also killed by the rajputs. Highly infuriated by their audacity, Bahadur Khan sought permission to chasrise the offenders, which he was granted by emporer Shahjahan. Accordingly, he sent an army against the rebels under the command of his brother Diler Khan. The later reached here and attacked the Rajputs,at a place called Chinaur. Diler Khan was victorious in the battle. The traditions has it that all the three Rajas with their fifty two subordinate Zamindaars and 11300 men and women were killed. 1100 Afghans were also slain. Chhavi Singh zamindaar of Salmanpur could manage his escape.

Diler Khan sent the news of this victory to his brother Bahadur Khan. The later congratulated emperor Shahjahan for this success who granted fourteen mauza's in recognition of his achievement and ordered him to build a fort. Bahadur Khan, Diler Khan and Shahbaz Khan were also honoured with Khil'ats. Bahadur Khan then sent his directions to Diler Khan for foundation of Shahjahanpur. Khwaja Buland and Anwar ma'mar were sent for carrying the work of construction. The site selected for Shahjahanpur fort was Nonher Khera, near the junction of Khannaut and Garra. The settlement of Shahjahnapur was north of the fort.

After completion of this work Diler Khan visited the emperor and paid his respect. He was granted leave. He went to see his brother Bahadur Khan who was on expedition to Badakhshan. Bahadur Khan who had been serving in balkh since 1646 AD and to whom fourteen villages had been assigned in this region, persuaded the Afghans to migrate and settle in the newly founded city of Shahjahanpur. Consequently a caravan of 9000 Afghans belonging to different tribes arrived at Shahjahanpur under the leadership of Neknam Khan, Yusuf Khan and Shahbaz Khan. After the settlement of Shahjahnapur, Bahadur Khan and Diler Khan also reached there and stayed there for twelve days. This was the first and last visit of Bahadur Khan to Shahjahanpur.
